You may have been like me and heard your parents talking about this weird sport called "Pickleball" and wondered what is it?!
In short, what you need to know about Pickleball is this...
-It's the fastest growing sport in America
-It's most often played with doubles 2v2 but can be played 1v1
-The court is 1/4 the size of a tennis court measuring 20 ft by 44 ft
-It's played with a perforated polymer ball much like a wiffleball and paddles made from wood or composite material.
The RULES much like the name have a few wacky components...
SCORING
Game is played to 11, win by 2. Each team member gets to serve until they lose the point. Which brings us to the first wacky rule, the first team that serves only get 1 serve. The scoring is a series of 3 numbers; server #1 or server #2. Example when someone calls out 8-3-2 it means the serving team's score is 8, the opponent's score is 3 and the second server is serving. Keeping the score is challenging in the beginning but you will get the hang of it!
The serve must be underhand from behind the baseline, cross-court and clear the NVZ (non-volley zone) also endearingly called "the kitchen" and only the serving team can score points.
More of the wacky rules...
-After the serve the receiving team must let the ball bounce, then the serving team must let the return shot bounce once before the ball can be hit. After the ball bounces once on each side the ball can then be volleyed out of the air UNLESS you are standing in the kitchen...the ball must bounce in the kitchen first before it is striked.
